Come As You Are

familyfpIt is important that Christians do not judge one another in such trivial things as the way we dress for church. Each of us must answer to God for everything we do; including the way we dress: but most importantly, how we manifest or fail to manifest to those around us the love of Christ.

We should never make our standards the divine will of God for others. Instead, we must seek to create an atmosphere of fellowship and worship that will allow anyone to feel welcomed and safe to be true in their fellowship, relationships and worship. Leadership must create and nurture this worship environment that partners with the Holy Spirit in welcoming everyone into God’s kingdom. You don’t have to be dressed up and fancy to worship with us, but if you if you choose to you are also welcomed. Just come – As you are! God wants us the spiritual beings, not the perishable adornments we sometimes feel compelled to equip ourselves with. The lyrics of the following hymn by Charlotte Elliott are a reminder of how we should come to worship the Lord.

Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need in Thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
